Maria E. Andreu is a writer and speaker whose work has appeared in Newsweek, The Washington Post, NJ.com and the Newark Star Ledger.  She is currently at work on her debut novel, Illegal.

Born in Spain to Spanish-citizen parents raised in Argentina, Maria came to the U.S. as a young child.  When a death in the family caused  her and her mother to leave the U.S., it suddenly became evident to Maria that they lacked the proper documentation to return to the only home she’d ever known.  That started what became a two-year odyssey to return, ended when Maria, then age 8, and her mother crossed the Mexican border “undocumented.”

After obtaining American citizenship thanks to the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, Maria has worked for immigrants’ rights, shared her story, and served as co-chair of Community of Friends and Action, an advocacy and service organization.

Maria is a proud mother of two, adoptive mother to various furry creatures, loves her iris and rose garden, her wonderful town in New Jersey and an occasional night out on the town in New York City.  She blogs here and at her 51 First Dates After Divorce blog.
