Then, read stories about main characters who give up their rooms for displaced family, decide their own answer to the question “where are you from?” In Come On In, you’ll also find so much more… Come On In illuminates fifteen of the many facets of the immigrant experience, from authors who have been shaped by the journeys they and their families have taken from home—and to find home.

It is important to realize the critical role that books can play in young readers’ lives. Too often, kids don’t see themselves in the same old assigned reading. Without a doubt, readers connect best with books in which they see themselves. Above all, Come On In strives to give them just that. First, it is full of stories from writers who have lived experiences like the ones their characters face. Second, it tells a wide variety of stories in which many readers will see themselves. Most importantly, it speaks to universal themes of inclusion, belonging and finding home.

Of course, it is not just kids with immigrant pasts who can find value in this book. As we know, reading creates empathy. That is to say, reading about the experiences of others helps us better understand them. Come On In offers kids a glimpse into many varieties of the immigrant experience. Undeniably, readers will find stories they enjoy. But, more than that, they will learn things they didn’t know, regardless of their own experiences. Whether they have a recent immigrant past or have been in the same spot for generations, Come On In will delight and enlighten.

For this reason, Come On In makes an ideal addition to any literature or social studies curriculum. What’s more, it is excellent independent reading. Additionally, it makes a fine addition to summer reading lists.
