I sometimes worry that THE SECRET SIDE OF EMPTY won’t go as far as it could because readers might be reluctant to read an “issues book.” I worked hard to make TSSoE not be about immigration, but about growing up stuck in a situation outside one’s own control (otherwise known as growing up). When I read a review that “gets” that and appreciates it, it makes my heart sing.
The Children’s and Teens’ Book Connection wrote a review that points out how M.T. and THE SECRET SIDE OF EMPTY are about issues facing just about every teenager. Click here to read it. It’s beautiful.
