When I was in high school in Union City, New Jersey, there was a rundown old place called Roosevelt Stadium. I don’t know when it was used as a stadium, because back then it just looked haunted and closed. Many years later, I was invited to tour Union City High School l in preparation for my reading there and I was stunned to see the transformation. Built right on the site of the old Roosevelt Stadium, the new Union City High School is not just a beautiful building but a place where great strides in education are being made. So much so, in fact, that a book was written about it: Improbable Scholars: The Rebirth of a Great American School System and a Strategy for America’s Schools.
Well, imagine my delight and surprise when I learned that PBS is doing a documentary on Improbable Scholars and Union City High School and the way they’re making a difference in the lives of so many kids. And, what’s best, that they will be filming tomorrow while I’m there doing my author visit! I feel honored that I’ll get a little glimpse at the behind-the-scenes of the making of a documentary about such a special place. Stay tuned for pictures!
