As some of you may know, I was an undocumented immigrant. In 1988 I got put on a path to U.S. citizenship by the Immigration Reform and Control Act… basically an amnesty. So, as you can imagine, having felt intimately the saving grace of that legislation, it would not surprise you to know that I consider it a pretty good thing.
So you can also imagine I was dismayed when my daughter came home from school saying a teacher had told her that we can’t offer the estimated 11 million currently in the U.S. undocumented an amnesty because the amnesty of the 1980s “failed.” For my reaction (plus a list of books to set him straight): Click here.
