All I wanted for Mother’s Day was an iris bloom… and I got one!!!

aggressively_forward_irisMy lovely Aggressively Forward decided to give me my wish and grace me with one single, gorgeous bloom.  It was a nail biter, though.  When I woke up around 6:00 a.m.-ish I leaned out my bedroom window to see and it was still all tight in the bud.  Later, when I went for a walk in my favorite woods with my mom, it had finally opened.  Happiness galore.  There are dozens ready to bloom, of all different colors and I know they’ll start this week.  But at least I got my Mother’s Day flower.  And what a beauty it is… the detail on it is stunning.

Besides my flower, I got my favorite ice cream from my daughter, who knows me so well (Haagen Dazs Dulce de Leche) plus a sweet note from my son and perfect weather for our barbecue.  (Countless years married to the food industry taught me to avoid restaurants like the plague on major holidays).

On the iris note, it occurs to me that if I want to stop stressing the “irises before Mother’s Day” I just should buy some earlier blooming varieties.  Since I’m about to cut a new flower bed into the lawn (the lawn elimination program continues slowly but surely) it’s a good time to fill a bed with early varieties.

Here are my lead contenders:

Nouveau Riche (click to see) – I think this will look nice surrounded by daffodils.  And it’s really tall!

Footloose (click to see) – I am a total sucker for all things two-tone.

Happy Mother’s Day to all!
