In Writing

As you may know, the main character in Love in English is Ana, a girl who is new to the U.S. and is in the process of learning English. Luckily, I’ve got an inside line to Ana, so I asked her what she’d recommend for holiday presents for that person in your life who is learning or already loves English and wants to celebrate it. Here are her recs:

Word by Word, the Secret Life of Libraries by Kory Stamper:

Written by someone who understands English so well, her job is actually to write dictionaries! One reviewer calls this “a love letter to letters,” and I’d like to think that Love in English is a bit of that as well.

The Little Prince Writing Gloves.

Words on gloves? Yes, please! Better still, these gloves are fingerless, for writing, or for holding hands with a certain someone.

Paddywax Library Collection William Shakespeare Scented Soy Wax Candle.

Sure, Shakespeare makes my head hurt sometimes, but he also wrote some of the most beautiful English words I’ve ever seen, like “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate.” And this candle smells awesome.

Books are Magic pin.

Do you think books are magic? Imagine living in one!

Book Page Ornaments. If you want a reminder on your tree about everything that’s beautiful about books, these book page ornaments do the trick.

Leather journal. Do you spend a lot of time wondering about words you don’t fully get and jotting down thoughts? Me too. It’s always nice to have a special notebook to put them in.
